2024 Wrapped: A Year of Contributions
2024 has been a rewarding year. We contributed to multiple projects in the climate and Regen space. These contributions were sometimes work, where we contributed man-hours, and other times financial donations. The year was punctuated by grant rounds, such as Gitcoin Grants 20, 21, and the Regen Citizens round.
AIAO
We’ve been following the Climate Action & Accounting SIG for a couple years now. They’re doing fundamental work. One of the working groups is developing “An ontology for anthropogenic impact accounting”. We decided to dedicate some time to helping this effort. We got involved in January.
The purpose of the ontology is to standardize terminology so that companies and organizations that are involved in impact accounting are all using the same concepts. That’s a tall order, and as we got acquainted with the core people it became apparent that they’ve been working on this endeavor for years.
Our contribution was minimal and followed our typical roles, with communication from Kit and code from Abhi. Abhi updated their OWL file, the document that stores all the aspects of the ontology. We also posted a blog post, “Enabling Climate Impact Accounting“ that elucidates the project.
Later we guided the core team leading up to the Gitcoin Grants 21 Round. We’ve done it before so we know the ins and outs. The AIAO team earned about $1033 in donations. We expected more but maybe because it was summer the round seemed under attended.
Greenpill Dev Guild
Another org we had seen being active in the climate space was Greenpill Network. There are Chapters, which are location-based in a country or city. Then there are Guilds, based on expertise with remote members. There’s a Writers Guild, a Gov Guild, and we checked out the Dev Guild.
It was obviously early days. A lot of aspects were being worked out on the fly. We could see that there was a core of active players and a larger community of caring and concerned people. These are essential ingredients for a movement to manifest. We decided to contribute.
As the Dev Guild meetings take place favoring US time, it’s hard for Abhi to participate but he stays abreast by watching recordings and following the social channels. For instance Warpcast has become a hotbed of activity and Greenpill is running channels for the Network and Dev Guild.
Kit has been doing Business Development, working on grants, partnerships, and branding. He also became one of the Treasury Managers, investing Dev Guild capital to earn an attractive yield.
After a growth year in 2024 we expect the Greenpill momentum to continue. We’ll keep contributing man-hours in 2025.
Donations
Besides helping out various climate initiatives we also donated regularly in the Gitcoin Grant rounds. Back in 2023 during Gitcoin Grants Round #19 (GG19) we earned about $2000 from donations. We didn’t have any immediate need for the cash so we deposited it in an Idle Finance pool.
That pool has become a little trust fund. We don’t touch the capital but we withdraw the interest in order to donate to projects that we like. We’ve participated in every Gitcoin round in 2024.
In GG20 we donated to 50 projects. Then in GG21 we created a ‘collection’, a listing of every project in the Climate Round. As all those projects have been validated by the Climate Coordination Network it was an easy decision to contribute to all 72 of them.
During GG22 the CCN took a break and we donated to 66 projects across a variety of verticals. For most of those we utilized $USDGLO, the new Glo Dollar stablecoin. The consortium donates their profits to public goods!
It’s a wrap 🎁
In 2025 we expect to continue contributing, both with man-hours and financially. Would you like to join us? Onboarding into Chaîne Research is easy. If you’re curious about Greenpill Network, check out “Taking the Green Pill”.
In any case, all the best for the New Year!
